We were so excited, but then morning sickness started to set in. However, for me it was more than that. I started cramping really bad, and found myself laying in bed, lights off, curtains pulled, and I slept. I didn't want to eat, nor did I want to do anything. It was as if I was drained of all my energy, and desires to even do anything. One night, it got so bad, then I started to notice that I was bleeding. I then asked Fehi to take me to the Emergency Room, so we drove late at night to LDS Hospital. When we got there the cramps seemed to let up, but as soon as we got in our room I noticed that I was bleeding even more. They gave me medicine for the pain, and ran some tests, then did an ultrasound. Fortunately, everything was okay with the baby, but they had found the source of the bleeding, they found a Fibroid in my Uterus. They told me that because of that Fibroid, I would bleed out a little bit more, but that all was ok with our little baby.
Luckily, the cramps and pain did let up, and I was able to eat a little bit more. By this time, I had already lost a little more than 30 pounds just in the first trimester of pregnancy. I weighed 230 lbs at marriage, then by the time I weighed in at my first appointment (at 12/13 weeks) I was at 197 lbs. I remember the day we had our appointment to find out what our little baby was. They did their usual taking pictures of their feet, and hands, and head and such. Then they came to looking at what the gender was. I already knew as soon as they moved to the spot, because you could see "three legs" and then they confirmed that we were having a BOY!
My pregnancy, aside from the first trimester, went pretty well. I still loved to dip everything in Ranch, however, it couldn't just be the salad dressing ranch, it had to be ranch packaged for dipping. I also couldn't eat certain tongan food. For instance lupulu or lusipi, it had to be wrapped and either steamed or cooked in the oven, if you cooked it just in a pot (like just cut it into pieces and cook it on the stove) then I got sick, I would get a headache, then I would throw up. I think I drank a lot more coke too. Lol. However, I did slowly gain weight but back up to 227 lbs by the time I gave birth.
On the day of February 18, 2009 I woke up early morning at about 6:30am because I was starting to feel contractions. I kept a log of how intense and how long they lasted, and times in between contractions, and then I made a call to my OB. She advised that I take my time, but if my contractions are 2-3 minutes apart and are consistent, then to come in. Well by 7:00 a.m. they started to become more consistent. So I jumped in the shower, got ready, packed up a hospital bag and we headed out. We actually stopped by McDonalds for breakfast on our way, and I remember having contractions in between bites (I was eating a breakfast burrito and of course I had my large coke). When we got to the hospital, we told the secretary I was in labor and she opened the door to let us in. We then stood at the counter where I gave my information to them, and they prepared my bracelet and paperwork. I remember having contractions, and stood there waiting to go to my room. They then led me to my room where I put on the hospital gown, and got into the hospital bed. I had made it known that I did NOT want an epidural, and that I wanted to Breastfeed.
Contractions started to get more intense, and soon enough I was at 9 cm, I was already at 5cm when I had arrived at the hospital. They had warned me not to push, because my doing so I could swell up the cervix and it could close a little more. I told them of the urges to push that I was having, so to help me out they moved me to another with a bathtub to help me with my contractions. It didn't help, and I remember just pushing even though they said not to, and when they rechecked me they said I was at 8.5 cm. I then just gave up and told them to give me the epidural, because I was feeling these urges to push and I'm going to push if they don't. So they called it in, and said it would be about 20 minutes before someone could come, right then my O.B. Dr. Rebecca Ponder walked in and said "it's time to push!" Those were the words I waited for! And so the pushing began. They stationed a mirror in front of me to let me see, and hopefully it'll motivate me to keep pushing (I was soo tired by then) but I never actually saw anything because the mirror wasn't positioned right. So push after push, I wasn't getting anywhere. Then they positioned the mirror correctly and I could just see his full head of hair, within the next minute he literally flew out (they were right about the mirror motivating me).
At 1:38 p.m. Moeakiola Fisilau Latu was born.
I was so overwhelmed by the experience of birthing my own child naturally, without any medication. And we were so happy to welcome our first born child. The whole birthing experience had left me with a face full of bursted blood vessels, and bloodshot eyes. Apparently I was pushing the wrong way more than half of the time. It wasn't until I realized that I had to concentrate my pushing "down there" versus just holding my breath and pushing. You know when you want to "unplug your ears" so you hold your breath, pinch your nose and you push (just in your face) and then hopefully your ears kind of "pop". Well that's what I was doing, therefore I bursted vessels in my face, neck, and eyes! I was actually really kind of scary looking too lol.
Moeakiola weighed 7 lbs 7 oz and he was 21 inches long. Here's more pictures of him throughout his growth and years:
