In July of 2009 we found out that we were pregnant with our second child. It was a little unexpected, but welcomed nonetheless. This pregnancy was actually very good in comparison to my first pregnancy. I didn't get sick as much, and I did tolerate a lot more foods. The day we found out we what we were having, I remember watching and just knowing that we were having a girl. Fehi was thinking it was probably another boy, but because this pregnancy was so much more different, I knew it was a girl. As the ultrasound technician did her rounds of ultrasound pictures, she then came to the angle where we could see if it was a boy or girl. With Baby Moe, it was so obvious he was boy because we could clearly see "3 legs", but this time there was only two legs, and so we found out we were having a girl. I didn't have much complications with this pregnancy, except for some bleeding at first due to the fibroid in my uterus.
My original due date was April 9, 2010 but on April 2, 2010 I woke up to contractions. I remember it being a friday morning, and it was General Conference weekend as well. We had set on going this day to do some shopping for our little princess, because we didn't have anything but boy clothes. So I was still determined to go out and shop for her. So on our way we went to Jordan Landing. Stopped first at Ross, then stopped by at Iggy's to eat, but I couldn't eat in between the contractions I was having. The contractions were getting stronger, but didn't seem consistent enough to me, so we continued shopping. I wanted to go by Target, then Walmart. It was after Walmart that we decided to drive home. We were going to do some food shopping, but my contractions were more intense and about 4-5 minutes apart. So around 5 p.m. we headed home, showered got our things packed, and also packed a bag for Baby Moe to stay with my sister in law Maopa. Around 7pm we finally were headed on our way to the hospital. As soon as I got there, I believe my contractions were already 1-2 minutes apart. I got changed and got on the hospital bed, when they checked my cervix and I was already 7-8cm dilated.
We then found out that I was positive for Strep B (a test that they take at about 36 weeks), but I wasn't aware of it. The problem with this is, if you're positive for it, it's fine you just need to come early enough to get at least 2 doses of the antibiotics before you give birth, if not you put the baby in danger of having that bacteria in the baby. And that was what I was facing, because I didn't know that I was positive for this Strep B, I didn't come in earlier, and there wasn't enough time to give me even 1 dose. However, I didn't know any of this when I was in labor, I was concentrated on breathing through the contractions, and then we were ready to push. My own O.B. was out of town, but another one of her partners was there to deliver the baby. This experience in comparison to my first was a much better one. I remember pushing, and it didn't last very long before she came out. The first thing I asked was if I had torn anything or if I had any hemorrhoids (both problems I had with my first child) and they gladly said No! That I was good! You have no idea how excited I was, I just saved myself at least 2 weeks of painful recovery.
At 8 p.m. on April 2, 2010 Kesaia 'Atukaima'u Paea He'imoana Lokomaika'inani Latu was born.
We were excited to welcome our little girl, and I was also excited I didn't burst any blood vessels this time. This birth I also did go without epidural, which was what I wanted to do. And within the hour of giving birth, I was able to get up and walk to the wheelchair where they transported me to my new room, even though I felt I didn't need the wheelchair. Fehi even commented "you think your bad because you can walk after giving birth" and I basically said "Yupp! You know it!" lol. The next few days we spent time with her, and I did my best to get her latched on correctly. She was a little more harder to get breastfeeding right away (versus Baby Moe who latched on right away) but eventually she got the hang of it. At one moment they want to supplement formula with her because supposedly she had lost some weight since birth, which is expected, but they were worried because she had lost much more than she's suppose to. So I tried supplementing a little bit, then they came in a few moments later and told me that they were wrong, they had mixed up her charts with the lady next door. So she was actually doing fine.
On Sunday, we turned the T.V. on to watch the morning session of General Conference when a male Dr. walked in. He was covering for Dr. Vierra (our kids normal pediatrician, who is female by the way) and he came and turned off the T.V. and said he had to talk to us. He expressed his concern for our little Kesaia because she had tests that had come back that were positive for bacteria in her blood. This was not a good thing, and could really turn out to be serious, because then the bacteria could get into her brain and what not. While he's telling us this, I'm looking at her, and she's sleeping so peacefully. I couldn't imagine something in her blood that could be making her sick, it didn't seem possible, but because I didn't properly get antibiotics for the Strep B bacteria before I gave birth to her, that was what we were facing.
The Dr. then explained that he needed to do a spinal tap to test for meningitis, and that he needed to do it right away. It was then that we asked if Fehi could bless Kesaia first. He said we could, but he would have to come back in a few minutes and take her to do the test. So Fehi got on the phone to see if any of his family or friends could come up to the hospital to help him with the blessing. Well, no one could, and so we weren't sure what we were going to do, all I know is that we needed to give her a blessing. The Dr. then came back in and asked us if we were LDS, we said yes, then he said "Dad I can help you bless her." Not only did we find out he was LDS, but he also had oil. It was such a special moment for me because I knew Heavenly Father had his hand in this. Like I mentioned before, our regular pediatrician is a female, but just for that day a male Dr. covered for her, and I know it was no coincidence. He was there to help our daughter in more ways than just medically, he also helped in blessing her to health.
After they performed the test they had to leave Kesaia in the Nursery. So we got ready and packed our things because unfortunately I was being discharged that night. So we spent more time with her, called and asked for my in-laws to bring Baby Moe so we could spend time as a family, and then we said our goodbyes and went home. By this time I had decided it would probably be easier to not breastfeed, even though I really didn't want to give it up. So we went to sleep, and of course, as I decided I wouldn't breastfeed, my milk comes in. The next morning we took Baby Moe to his appointment with Dr. Vierra and she asked me if I was breastfeeding Kesaia. I told her no, but that my milk had come in, and she suggested that I breastfeed, especially with her fighting infection. So I decided to stay at the hospital all day, and I spent time with her, watched her sleep, changed her diapers, and breastfed her.
The next morning I was awoken by a phone call from Dr. Vierra. She said that the tests had come back negative, and that she thinks the test were contaminated, but she did not have any bacteria in her blood. Then she said the words I had been waiting for "Come and get your daughter." I excitedly packed a bag, grabbed her carseat and headed over to the hospital. It wasn't until I brought her home, and laid her on our bed, that it finally hit me that we now have 2 children.
